I had the privilege of meeting ultra-talented illustrator/designer, James Jean last January 6 at a book signing and artist’s talk event put together by Fullybooked. My husband, Kayo, and I took advantage of the opportunity and had our books signed. I, personally, learned so much from his talk. He said so many things that were very enlightening to me as an artist and I came out of it inspired to keep making art even if I have no idea what I’m doing. “Abandon what works for you and do something uncomfortable…Work around the mistakes and let it lead the process…I hate the word style, it’s almost superficial…To me, it’s the product, not the journey…” are just some of the words I took home with me.
James Jean’s art is truly amazing, even mind-boggling. The images he paints are almost like scenes in dreams. I think what I admire about him the most is his generosity as an artist. He gives all and without apology. He tells layer upon layer of stories in all that he makes.
