Follow our journey on Instagram (@kayocosio) this week as we build and roll out interactive street art installations with 5 young artists from our mega city. It’s all part of the art leg of Nike Battle Force, a month long celebration of basketball culture and the subcultures that coexist in the same spaces.
Spray paint, silkscreen, upcycling, metal, wood, and cement. We’ve been planning/building for weeks now and can’t wait to share our creations with you, along with the stories that inspired those creations from the artists’ respective home towns and street subcultures. The installations will be open to visit and play with too, then you’ll be able to vote for your favorite.
On a personal note, it’s a major goal of mine is to use my skill set to help foster an environment in our city that is safe for artists of all levels of both technical and narrative skill to pursue their passion. So picking up a basketball today and shooting some hoops was nice reminder to just get out there and do it no matter your skill level is. (read: I’m not that good at basketball) Whether that means building an art installation, painting a massive wall, customising your shoes, or just playing some pick-up 1-on1 with that stranger who was already the the court when you got there. The point is this: challenge yourself.
Join me and 5 awesome street artists as we step up to the challenge at the corner where street art meets street ball. We will build, play, and enjoy both art and sports. Come along for the fun.
