I love surprises! I also love giving people a pleasant surprise. That’s exactly what my family and I did for my Mom on her 67th birthday.
We, in the family, had all just come from a tough few weeks so my brothers and I really wanted to make sure she had a happy and wonderful birthday celebration. Our Mom most definitely deserved it!
The week before, we started planning for a small surprise party for her. My brothers and I don’t see each other very often so we did it all through text and over phone calls. We set it for the afternoon before her actual birthday which turned out to be a holiday. We planned to hold it at my parents house. I asked my dad to create some kind of diversion and take her out for a couple of hours that afternoon so we could prepare and set up.
Like Summer, my mom also really likes purple and she always liked it when I made decor for my kids’ parties, so I took time to make her fancy things for her party as well. I’ve been wanting to make those adorable paper tassels and I finally had the occasion for it!
Aside from the purple theme, I wanted it to be a party filled with hugs and kisses because we really just wanted our Mom to be showered with love. Hence, all the X and Os!
We also experienced some set backs. To start with, we were supposed to set up in the garden but it rained quite hard that afternoon so we had to move to the garage. Because of said rain, traffic got a little bad going to my parents place and we got stuck on the road longer than expected. We also didn’t get to buy fresh flowers because there was none available where we had planned to buy. And then, when we got there, Kayo and I realized we left the glass bottles I had prepared for the drinks! (Good thing my mom had a lot of paper cups stored.)
But inspite all that, our small surprise turned out to be a big success! When my parents arrived, my mom came in the gate and found all of us in the half wet garage, her children and grandchildren, singing her a happy birthday, with a cake and a simple feast laid out before her. She was so surprised and happy that she couldn’t hold back her tears! One by one, we kissed and hugged her and at that moment, I knew we had accomplished what we wanted.
The rest of the evening, we ate, we laughed and exchanged funny stories about how we prepared for the party and kept it secret all week. It was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed being able to do something like this with my brothers. But most of all, it was great to see my Mom beaming and genuinely happy!
We love you, Mommy! Hope you had the best birthday! 😀
