At the end of a pretty intense week, I think I had a pretty perfect lazy Sunday. Slept in, spent time with my family, fed my wife sushi, talked with the kids, and even squeezed in a couple cafe visits for www.dailydrinkmag.com So yeah, maybe not a real day off, since that last one is technically "work." But I realized that I don't really have very many hobbies anymore since I have a habit of converting my favourite things into new facets of my career. Drinks, board games, photography technology, comics, design and art have all found a place in my somewhat professional existence. Oh, and Read More
I’m a World’s Most Experimental Bartender Finalist!
Another page in my never ending quest to do yet another thing, here I am behind the bar at one of Manila's finest speakeasy cocktail bars. My partner Silvester Dan Samonte and I are now finalists at Glenfiddich's World's Most Experimental Bartender. Ditching adulting and coffee altogether for a switchup, we have some fun, carefree, and sweet ideas to transport you back to childhood. Frankly, what really want is to serve you a scotch experience that you're gonna wanna order 6 of. Cannot wait to serve you! Read More
Drinking Solo On the Last Night of Flying Solo
9 years ago tonight, I went to a bar by myself. Over couple of Estrella Galicia 1906 dark lagers, I contemplated my existence until closing time, which was past 2AM. My mom was texting me a lot, asking where I was and if I was ok. 2AM is not "late" by Manila standards, and mom knew that I regularly stayed out much later than that. But that night was different. It was different because I'd need to wake up early the next day: my wedding day. That next morning, wedding photographers would come to my home where I was getting dressed, and ask me why I was so relaxed, with no jitters. This night Read More
Catching Up
After a real busy crunch through 2018's Q4, it's great to have time with this crew and be 100% with them. It's a really interesting time for them, now that they can all communicate and try to be friends. It's a privilege to be able to observe that. I'm thankful for this. As things ramp up through 2019, I want to be sure to have days like these. Read More
Who to Bring to a Battle
I spent the last week working with this talented group of artists as they built their respective installations celebrating the culture of basketball in the Nike Battleforce Art Battle. I'd like to take a moment to talk about how these guys were selected for the project. When choosing the right group of artists to participate, I looked for a couple things. First is personality. What I was looking for specifically was characters that would interact well with one another. It's much like a good game of 3 on 3 street ball: what you want is guys who are fun to be around, but also can Read More
Made to run. Built to fly.
Jo turned 4 years old a couple weeks ago. She's growing up fast, and considering that she's the youngest of the three sisters, this seems significant for me. While I do have memories as early as 2 years old, most of my more tangible ones start at around 4. So if these girls are anything like their Papa, everything they see now, they will definitely remember. I want them to remember that we played. Read More
Not So Fresh. Thoughts on Work Wear.
Build day! (Follow along in Instagram stories.) Something I've been experimenting with is upcycling denim work wear, and personally customizing pants to my own style. Here at the build site, I'm very happy to see they that the pants are actual functioning perfectly in the carpentry workshop. It's nice and airy, but also keeping out all the sawdust and protecting from there odd scrape or flying nail. Street wear and work wear are so often about looking and being "Fresh." I have no beef with that, but it's not something I relate to. It's just not how I was raised, or who I've become. But who Read More
Play No Matter Your Skill Level
Follow our journey on Instagram (@kayocosio) this week as we build and roll out interactive street art installations with 5 young artists from our mega city. It's all part of the art leg of Nike Battle Force, a month long celebration of basketball culture and the subcultures that coexist in the same spaces. Spray paint, silkscreen, upcycling, metal, wood, and cement. We've been planning/building for weeks now and can't wait to share our creations with you, along with the stories that inspired those creations from the artists' respective home towns and street subcultures. The installations Read More
Pop Culture, Street Art, and Moments in our Memories
Fascination with pop culture never ends. This afternoon we took a moment to check out EXLD's newest mural at Eastwood City's mall dropoff. Summer, Emma, and Jo were enjoying Twin Popsies on a pleasantly warm October afternoon. It's snapshots like this that I hope stick in their memories. Pop culture and street art's continuous fascination with it are like the angelic voices of a young Justin Bieber or Micheal Jackson. In the case of these musicians, we would hear their young, innocent, angelic voices and be transported back to a time when our own perceptions of love we're equally as pure Read More
Favorite things: my Pesado system
One of my favorite things these days is my Pesado 58.5 Tamper with Depth Adjuster. Paired nicely with Pesado's IMS basket and E61 competition screens (available at El Kapitan), I've been enjoying a consistency of high quality espresso extraction on a day to day, cup to cup basis. Read More
