While organizing the girls’ closet one morning last week, I found a sew-it-yourself soft doll kit, still unopened. It was a Christmas gift to me and Emma last year from some of our good friends. I hadn’t had a chance to work on it since we received it half a year ago, but on that morning, I found myself in the mood to sew so I decided to finally open it and make my daughter a soft doll.
It’s a simple stuffed doll that looks like a little pillow so it’s actually very easy to make. Step by step instructions were included in the kit as well as all the basic materials necessary, such as the fabric with a drawing of a girl on it, thread, a no-ouch tapestry needle, polyester stuffing and some markers to color the doll with.
The instructions suggested you can add whatever embellishments you’d like, so instead of just coloring the doll with markers, I decided to use some of my fabric scraps, felt and buttons to decorate it with.
Making the doll turned out to be very relaxing! I’m no good at it but that’s what sewing naturally does to me. I also really liked the idea of a DIY doll-making kit. Especially if your a mom of daughters old enough to learn how to sew, making dolls together is good practice and a fun, calming way to bond. Then afterwards, you get to have your very own dolls to play with.
These lovely soft doll kits are from La Pomme, a handmade toy shop and children’s craft space at The Collective in Makati. The stuff they make and sell are simply charming and adorable! After maybe about an hour and a half of sewing and stuffing, I called Emma to our room and handed her the doll. The smile on her face was so precious, it melted my heart! She just stared at it and cradled it for another five minutes before running out with it to resume play. Ah, my sewing efforts had already been rewarded! I love the feeling I get after having made something pretty with my own hands, more so when it makes my dear ones happy. 🙂
