The other day, I was staring at the cork board hanging on the wall near our kitchen and thought it really looked...boring. I've had it since I was a teenager and it has moved with me and Kayo from our first apartment to our current one, so it badly needs a makeover. I was in the mood to paint so I thought I could easily make this board a little more exciting using some white paint I had stored. So I cleared my cork board and here's how I decorated it: 1. Using masking tape, I created a pattern on the cork board by making diagonal stripes. I created zigzags and triangles by Read More
This Week’s Inspiration
Kayo was supposed to post his Midweek Inspiration a few days ago, but Honeycomb Communities recently launched jerichorosales.tv so he has been very busy filming, writing and putting together content for the website. We've been excited about it for months prior to it's launch because it's a fun and interesting project. It is also because Echo is a very fun and interesting person so his online home should reflect exactly that. I must say that it's turning out to be a great website, not just aesthetically but also content-wise. You should go take a look whether you're an Echo fan or not. It's a Read More
DIY Stenciled Tablecloths
This was an art project I did for Summer's second birthday party last month and it also happened to be my favorite DIY decor piece for that occasion. I said I would post a tutorial so here it goes. With the right pattern and color, decorating a plain old tablecloth can help make your dining table or party venue look festive. It's a great conversation piece! It's also very easy to make and quite inexpensive. Here's how: 1. Prepare the materials: cardboard, craft knife, cutting mat, sponge, textile paint (I bought mine at True Value, P50 for a 100ml tub, which is enough for 2-3 Read More
DIY Thank You Cards
I read somewhere that consistently grateful people are happier and more satisfied with their lives. It also helps create a generous spirit in us. Therefore, gratitude is a virtue I would definitely want to develop in my children. Summer, who just turned two, cannot even pronounce "Thank you" properly yet. She says "tenchu" or something like that, but it makes me happy every time she says it without me having to remind her. Being consistently grateful is a quality even I have not perfected but I'm working on it and learning along side my girls. The week after Summer's birthday party, I Read More
60 Minutes
People think I have so much spare time because I get to do a lot of crafts but in fact, I can only do these things when my girls are asleep. That goes double or triple when the task involves sharp tools like cutters and scissors. That means an hour or two in the afternoons, max. That's also if I'm lucky enough that they nap at the same time! So I've learned to make the most of my 60-minute or so breaks when I get them. If I'm not napping myself, you'll find me reading, painting, working on the computer or — you guessed it — crafts! That involves scrounging around the house for junk that I can Read More
Gold and Silver: Simple Hand-painted Greeting Cards
I finally found some time to try out my gold and silver paint brush tubes. They're shaped like Chinese paint brushes, so it's best to use only the tip. I also had to make sure not to squeeze too much paint out so it doesn't bubble or blot. I decorated these folded sheets of cardboard and made blank greeting cards which I set aside and will use when the occasion arise. It takes a little getting used to. As you see, they're not perfect but that's okay because that's the charm of handmade! Aren't they lovely? They're so simple and quickly made yet they look elegant. Read More
DIY Animal Kiddie Tees
Summer is very much into animals these days (Thanks to Madagascar and Finding Nemo!) so I made her these cute lion and giraffe shirts. All I needed were plain white shirts, a pencil, a fabric marker and a cutting mat/cardboard. I didn’t get to take step by step photos but basically, here’s what I did (so simple!): 1) Insert your cutting mat or cardboard inside the shirt so the ink won’t bleed through to the back side 2) Use a pencil to draw your design. It will wash off so you don’t have to worry about making mistakes 2) When you’re happy with what you’ve drawn, use the fabric Read More
DIY Wednesday: Washi Flowers
Here are five easy steps on how to make flowers using washi tape: 1 Prepare your materials. Aside from the Washi tapes (which you can order online at Paper Chic Studio. So many designs to choose from!), what you need are things you can easily find around the house: barbecue sticks or chopsticks, scotch tape, double sided tape or glue, scissors, cardboard 2 Cut a circular piece of cardboard. This will be the center of your flower so the size depends on how big or small you want it to be. 3 Cut a strip of washi tape at least 3 inches long. Stick one end on the circular piece of Read More
DIY Wednesday: Recycled Denim Coin Bank
The other day, I was looking for a piggy bank because I wanted to start saving spare change but I realized I didn’t own one! So I thought I’d make a quick art project out of it. I reclaimed a powdered milk tin can from our junk pile and chose one that wasn’t so old and rusty. To make it look nice, I decided to wrap it in style with denim. I’ve kept a stash of denim scraps from cutting pants into shorts last summer. I think there are many creative things you can do with them (Like last Christmas I wrapped presents in denim. See it here)! My denim covered coin back turned out to be very easy Read More
